Harry and Carole:

I see that Carole pulled up my answer that I had originally posted on
Conch_L. In Olsson's original description he first describes the new
species, followed by a small section on differentiation of Oliva edwardsi
from similar species of Oliva. At the end he has a one sentence paragraph
that says:

"This Olive is named for Lt. Colonel Corrinne Edwards of the Miami Shell
Club, a dedicated collector of Recent and fossil shells."

I have never met either Axel or Corrinne. I did have correspondence with
Axel for several years before his death and he was one of my reviewers on
my first Olive paper on systematics. I was told by some paleontologists
(including one very well known tertiary malacologist) that Axel used the
male gender for the species as a joke because Corrinne was constantly
bothering him, bringing fossil mollusca to him in hopes that he would
eventually name one after her. Therefore, they apparently knew each other
according to my sources. Maybe someone in the Miami Shell Club or someone
else who knew both of them could confirm this.

I hope that this further clarifies the issue. Of course, Petuch rectified
this later in one of his publications.

Paul
