The most important thing is to be sure that the shell or whatever you want to describe never has benn described as a species or a  subspecies before. Further the rules of nomenclature don't allow now
to describe a form or a variation. It muse be a ssp. minimum. Then you should take a name without
any disreputable or ordinary sense. You can the shells or whatever name after persons or other
animals, after some attributes. You should study the different types of shells which has been
described, so that you are sure not describe a synonym for the future. And you should take a
valuable magazine, eg or malacological newspaper  to describe it. You should fix a holotypus
and paratypes. This is in general all  what is required for a new description.

What does it require to describe a new species?  Who decides if it is valid?  Is it possible for someone self-taught to get the job done?
