I dove at Cayos Cochinos, Bay Islands, Honduras some years ago with a buddy
who learned to shell in the Pacific (we do it a little differently in the
Caribbean) and carried a light (it was daytime). We were on coral peaks that
went from almost the surface down to about 40 feet. About half way through
the dive we looked at each other in disappointment and turned our thumbs
down.
About five minutes later she came barreling towards me grinning around her
regulator and holding up a Conus granulatus. She had found it using her
light in one of the crevasses in the coral, where there was red coral/algae.
On that dive she found six and I found none!
I did find a fresh dead specimen at intertidal depth on Roatan some years
later.
I understand they may be found on the east coast of Florida if you are able
to dig deep into piles of rocks to the bottom.
