there is an interesting article on the formation of patterns on Cypraea
shells:
Savazzi, Enrico (1998): The colour pattern of cypraeid gastropods. Lethaia
Vol. 31, pp. 15 - 27.
It was published in a Norwegian geological journal. If you can´t find it in
your library I can send you a copy of  this paper or try to scan it. E.
