This might be opportunistic behavior on the part of the fish. I'm
guessing the octopus where there first.

Cephalopods die after they take care of their various reproductive
responsibilities. Mom & pop sculpin are probably fasting while tending
their nests. Might just be that right about the time that they are
ready for the post-natal breakfast, there is suddenly a lot of octopus
meat for the taking.
