I don't know how much progress has been made yet in trying to connect the genetically distinct populations with published names.  At least one river contains two genetically distinct forms with very similar shells, but this has not been found for other localities.  Simpson (1914) lists popenoi Call, 1885 as another possibility, and some specimens from west of the Mississippi are genetically closer to stegaria than to aberti.  Unfortunately, the type locality for aberti is among the extirpated populations, though others survive within that river system.
