For all of you conch-l addicts who are chained to your computers for the
weekend of the Glorious Fourth of July, here are some mental pursuits for you.

The first appeared in some publication in years past, and a clean-up
project has just unearthed it. I don't know the source, or the answers!
If it is your work, speak up and take your credit. Or your blame.

************************************************************

And next for your puzzling pleasure is one of those mind-bending puzzles my
son calls "The Dread 'Who-Wore-The-Dress-With-The-Purple-Piping?' Puzzles."
I do have the answers to this one. Be careful. Don't be led astray. This
one has a mental meander or two.

The first Conchle to email me the correct answer to this second puzzle,
"American Seashells," wins a shelly prize. Please don't send your answer
to the list because you'll either spoil it for everyone else and cause a
flame war, or you'll confuse them, and cause a flame war. You'll also
become ineligible for my super-duper whing-ding of a prize (Could ...could
it...??? could it possibly be a Hamburger Sea Bean surmounted by a Brass
Wretched Aspella?!!??!!! Nope. Don't have one.) by thoughtlessly sending
your answer to Conch-L. I'll publish the correct solution and the winner
if there is one on Conch-L on July 9.

AMERICAN SEASHELLS

In five consecutive meetings of the Greater Lesser Inlet Shell Club,
beginning in January and running through May, Jeanneae, Thomae, and three
other club members presented exhibits on different shell families and
superfamilies. One exhibit was "The Peerless Pandoroidea." In June, the
grateful club members gave their exhibitors a party. They served Coquina
Chowder, Oysters on the Half Shell, Conch Steaks, Sea Bean Casserole, Sea
Lettuce Salad, and little Purple-Iced Pecten Cookies for dessert.

They also presented awards.

Unbeknownst to the exhibitors, their exhibits were being rated all during
the season by the rest of the club members for a combination of educational
value, interest level and accuracy, and at the party each exhibitor was
given an award for the place his display had received in the rating: 5th
place got a gold ribbon, 4th place a white ribbon, 3rd place a red ribbon,
1st runner up got a blue ribbon and the best display of all was awarded a
Grand Trophy consisting of a giant "Hamburger" sea bean on which was
mounted a brass Wretched Aspella, the Greater Lesser Inlet Shell Club Shell.

No two exhibits tied for their place in the ratings. From this information
and the clues below, can you find the full names of the five exhibitors,
(one last name is Adams), his or her taxon, the month they showed their
exhibits, and their award.

1. Jeannae's last name isn't Irus, but someone's is.

2. Mr. or Ms. Calliostoma's exhibit was rated higher than Thomae's. But it
received a lower place in the ratings than the display on the "Arcidae of
Antarctica."

3. In no instance was the rating number for an exhibit the same as the
number of the month in which it was presented.

4. No two of the men's exhibits were shown at consecutive meetings.

5. The exhibit on "The Trouble With Trochidae" was created by a woman.

6. The exhibit that received a gold ribbon, which was not one on the "All
the Tonnoidea of the World, Self-Collected," was claimed by a man.

7. Mr. or Ms. Bursa's place in the competition was the same as the number
of the month in which Jeanneae' showed her exhibit.

8. The small exhibit entitled "Victory Over the Veneroidea" was shown the
month just before the one in which the "Arcidae of Antarctica" was shown,
and it received an award that was one place higher than the Arcidae.

9. Conrad proudly displayed his shells after the exhibit on Veneroidea, and
before the pretty exhibit created by Ms. Thracia.

10. Irus habitually endured much kidding from Anadara and Jeanneae. The two
women loved to rib him about his perennial mispronunciation of the name of
his group.

Have fun,

Lynn Scheu
