> The question is about the origin of season names. I understand Spring---when things spring up from the ground; and Fall, when things fall from the trees. But what is the origin of Summer, Winter, and Autumn?

Summer-contraction of some more. "If I go collecting now, I might find sum mer shells."
Winter-contraction of when to. "I wonder win ter go collect shells when it will be cooler outside."
Spring-a place to look for hydrobiids, sphaeriids, etc.
Fall-what you don't wan't to do because you might break your shells
Autumn-contraction of a way to carry shells and collectors. "I might as well drive to the beach in my autumnmobile, since it still smells like low tide from the last trip."
