Dear John,

I tried to send an answer to Conch-L from my work-email but this was
rejected. so I'm sending it directly to you and would ask you kindly to
forward it to the list, so everyone can see the correct solution to this
bibliographic question :=)).

Any other info needed on Belgian/European publications: just ask us, that's
what librarians are for!

best regards,

Jan

The work by Georges Verhas is not the same as the Baudet publication! We
have both here at the library. Below you'll find the correct references:

Verhas, G. (1909). Les coquillages du littoral belge. Henri Lamertin:
Bruxelles, Belgium. 32, 5 plates pp.

(see also our webpage:
http://www.vliz.be/Vmdcdata/imis2/ref.php?show=html&refid=24619)

Baudet, J. Les coquillages du littoral belge = De schelpen van de Belgische
kust = Shells on the Belgian coast = Muschelschalen der Belgischen Küste.
James Baudet: Tournai, Belgium. 4 pp.

(see also our webpage:
http://www.vliz.be/vmdcdata/Imis2/ref.php?show=html&refid=62190)

Alas, the Baudet publication doesn't carry any date of publication. I have
checked this in the National Library of Belgium, and in the National History
Museum at Brussels.

My closest guess is:

-in any case before 1953 (because of the spelling that is 'ancient')

-most probably between 1945-1950, because it isn't mentioned in any other
work before that period, and occasionally in works from shortly after the
war (and we have all publications on Belgian marine fauna on our shelves).

But I'd be cautious: best way to work in such cases is to mention no date of
publication at all!

best regards,

Jan Haspeslagh
