Ross,

Back in the late nineteenth century, the Challenger expedition used
tangle-netting on the abyssal plains to collect echinoderms. The apparatus
was shaped like a big rake with tufts of rope attached at intervals on the
crossbar of the T. Brittlestars and seastars, which have numerous small
spines, would be tangled in the tufts of ropes and dragged along, apparently
without harming them as specimens. Caution: This apparatus would be likely
to become caught on a seafloor having obstructions such as rocks, reefs,
wood or wrecks.

What "Good Stuff" do you refer to? Not echinoderms, I gather?

Here in the Deep South, where we sometimes claim to have only two seasons
(one being summer, and the other "July and August"), I could use some of
your "cool nights." But at least we get to see Red-spotted Purples and Gulf
Fritillaries now and then, and little Fiery Skippers too. Frustrated inland
shell collectors can do worse than to plant a butterfly garden: Colorful
shells on the wing!

Subject: Tangle netting information needed......

I wonder if there is anywhere on the web a "how to" expose on
tangle-netting, which seems to be only used in the Philippines for some
strange reason? I have a contact in another place on the Pacific Rim who
would also like to try his hand at this effective, safe way of Getting the
Good Stuff, but i cannot seem to find any good information about it.

From the Cool Night of the Canadian Wilderness,
ross.
