Not exactly "snails", but chalices have been fabricated from Nautilus
shells. There is one of these pictured in Abbott's Kingdom of the Seashell.
Tridacna shells have been utilzed as baptismal fonts. Turbinella pyrum of
course plays a role in Hindu religious observations. And cowrie shells were
used as eyes in various idols made by early African tribes (sorry, can't
recall what country).
