Larger size reflects more energy going into growth.  This could mean
that conditions are good, e.g. more abundant food, more nutritious
food, better weather, less disturbance.  On the other hand, more
growth can reflect not putting energy into reproduction, e.g.
unsuitable weather or castration due to parasites.
