                              SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT

                            THIRD ANNUAL GATHERING
                SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA UNIFIED MALACOLOGISTS (SCUM)

                           Saturday January 16, 1999
                               Room 123 - 10 AM
                 Torrey Pines Campus, National University
11255 North Torrey Pines Rd. La Jolla, CA 92037

                              Host: Hans Bertsch

SCUM is an informal association of professional, amateur, and student
malacologists and paleontologists in Southern California, who are active or
interested in research on mollusks. The purpose of the annual gathering is
to facilitate contact and keep one another informed of research activities
and opportunities. There are no dues, officers, or publications. SCUM is
patterned after the Bay Area Malacologists (BAM), which has been hosted by
malacologists at different institutions each year. SCUM I was hosted by
George Kennedy at San Diego State University in January 1997 and SCUM II was
hosted by James McLean and Lindsey Groves at the Natural History Museum of
Los Angeles County in January of 1998. Both meetings were attended by over
20 persons.

All persons interested in Recent and/or fossil mollusks are invited to
attend. Presentations and discussions should be informal and briefly cover
research interests. A slide projector, overhead projector, and internet
capabilities will be available for those wishing to treat their work in more
detail. Coffee and donuts will be provided. A catered lunch by a local deli
will be available for a modest charge ($5-$7) to attendees rather than
leaving the NU campus. Parking is free and maps of the area with detailed
directions will be provided. Please contact SCUM III meeting host Hans
Bertsch privately for further information.
