Options are so much greater today if one has access to the internet. They are
several web site that I know of that allow individuals to list shells for
sale or trade. As a dealer, the few times I have been approached, I recommend
the consignment process, if time is not a factor. Any time that time, is a
factor, it effects options and especially value. So one key, is don't let
time become a factor. At least have a plan in place. Check with the museum
see if they will accept the collection. Local colleges, universities and some
high schools might be interested. But expect to incur all costs. Their
budgets are tight and the cost of shipping etc. might not be in the budget. A
donation to any tax exempt organization that will accept the shells is also
something to consider, but remember they need cash and will most likely just
sell the shells anyway they can. Check with the children see if there is any
interest (don't be disappointed when there isn't). Nothing worse than seeing
the kids selling the whole collection (about which they know nothing) to
someone for pennies on the dollar. If it is a large enough collection it
would be worth while having it appraised. That would be handy for many
things, including insurance claims if they ever arise.

Plan ahead and don't let time be a factor. Best wishes,

Frank Walker
