I think that it is unlikely that low biomass systems would be the main source of
rare species.  Rather, these are likely to inhabitat high biomass systems in
which productivity is also high and energy turnover is rapid (e.g., tropical
rainforests, coral reefs).  Such systems permit the survival of many rare and
highly specialized species.
