No, I'm not talking about my dishes. The spots are on my whelks - Busycon
sinistrum to be exact. Fortunately only on two of them. The worst is a
large specimen I picked up on sandbars offshore in Apalachee Bay. The spots
are bright white and seem to actually be under the glossy surfaces around
the aperture. There are no breaks in the surface that I can see with a hand
lens. Has anyone ever seen this before? I'm guessing it's caused by boiling
the shells since the spots aren't there when the shell is fresh. Oddly,
I've boiled many a shell without this happening. From now on, I will try
the microwave method, but in the meantime, I am wondering if those of you
not at the COA convention might know exactly why this happened.

Many thanks in advance!
Jim Miller
