That sounds like a Polygyra, which are quite common on the Florida beaches.
They don't really live at the beaches, but are brought there by the waves. It
sould have teeth in its aperture. Fresh shells are brown. Look it up in
Pilsbry's Land Mollusca of North America (volume I, part 2, p. 582).
