Marlo asked about instruments to clean and manipulate microshells. I
make mine whenever I need it... I pull out a fibre of my hair and stick
it onto the end of a toothpick. The shell is pressed down onto Prestik
or other sticky putty stuff. I then use the hair to clean the attached
debris off the shell and out of its aperture. In the case of the
Streptaxidae, which have toothy apertures, I call this action 'brushing
their teeth'.

PS why don't polar bears eat penguins either?
