You can't go wrong with the Coolpix 900 series; I use a 990 to take shell
shots for our slowing-growing guide to Sanibel Shells (check it out,
shellmuseum.org, paying attention to shell sizes). The camera also fits
neatly (using an mechanical adapter/holder) onto the eyepiece of most
microscopes, allowing for shots of very minute stuff.
