Martin Tremor inquired if Murexiella macgintyi has the same spelling
problem as Cyphoma mcgintyi. As it turns out it doesn't, because its
original spelling is "macgintyi".
Many unjustified emendations of species named for Tom and Paul McGinty have
resulted from a widespread misinterpretation of the International Code of
Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN). The ICZN recommends that "mac-" be used in
preference to "mc-" when forming names of new species based on names of
people such as McGinty or McLean. This is a recommendation, not a rule, and
it is not retroactive. So if someone ignores the recommendation (or worked
before the recommendation was added to the Code), the name stands as
originally spelled.
Nine names originally spelled "mcgintyi"
Petaloconchus mcgintyi (Olsson & Harbison, 1953). Incorrectly changed to
"macgintyi" by Ortiz-Corps (1985)
Cyphoma mcgintyi Pilsbry, 1939. Incorrectly changed to "macgintyi" by
Poirier (1954).
Distorsio constricta mcgintyi Emerson & Puffer, 1953. Incorrectly changed
to "macgintyi" by Poirier (1954).
Latirus mcgintyi Pilsbry, 1939. Incorrectly changed to "macgintyi" by
Poirier (1954).
Anachis mcgintyi Usticke, 1959.
Conus mcgintyi Pilsbry, 1955. Incorrectly changed to "macgintyi" by Abbott
(1974) (and probably by someone earlier).
Eubela mcgintyi Schwengel, 1943. Incorrectly changed to "macgintyi" by
Poirier (1954).
Liguus fasciatus mcgintyi Clench, 1932. Incorrectly changed to "macgintyi"
by Abbott & Dance (1989) (and possibly by someone earlier).
Helicostyla mcgintyi M. Smith, 1932. Incorrectly changed to "macgintyi" by
Abbott & Dance (1989) in the synonymy of Chrysallis palliobasis.
Four names originally spelled "macgintyi"
Murexiella macgintyi (M. Smith, 1938). Incorrectly changed to "mcgintyi" by
M. Smith (1939).
Fasciolaria scalarina macgintyi M. Smith, 1936
Morum macgintyi M. Smith, 1937
Olivella macgintyi Olsson, 1956.
If anyone has additional or earlier instances of changes to McGinty
patronymics, please let me know. The collection here has type material of
most of the species named for the McGintys, and we need to sort all this out.
