Is anyone familiar with "Fusinus" africanae Bernard 1959?
I have just received 3 specimens, ordered because I had doubts of its
generic & familial placement. Well, it is neither a Fusinus or even a
buccinid. It appears to be an Afer, close to
A. pseudofusinus Fraussen & Hadorn 200x. Which itself I am not
absolutely sure is an Afer at all, but is a turbinellid (possibly in
need of a new genus).
Other turbinellids also are masquerading as Buccinidae:
Fasciolariinae, for example Dolicholatirus. A bulbous priotoconch is
a warning sign...
