Dear Dick et al.,
The narrator was Charles Torrey Simpson (1846-1942), who went on to
say "By the time I reached the city I looked like an Indian in war
paint, and I have no doubt that the people of Key West ... thought I
was a lunatic."
Nowadays I suspect he'd go un-noticed in that wonky municipality.
