Here is another question for the shell exhibit I am mounting for Cape Fear Museum.
When did the popular name for Phalium granulatum, (Born, 1778), Scotch bonnet get assigned to the shell?
The shell is named for its resemblance to a Scottish cap.
I have asked our historian if she can find a picture of such to include with the feature on the state shell as history relates that it was so designated such (in part*) to honer early Scottish settlers. Researching such has turned out to be somewaht more complicated than it sounds on the surface.
* I always heard a different story, but this one makes for better imagery.
If a date can be identified an appropriate picture of the head dress will be easier to narrow down as styles do change over time.
