The following is a posting for a malacology and invertebrate zoology collections manager at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture at the University of Washington in Seattle Washington.  The very extensive Phil and Sandra Nudelman Shell Collection has recently been donated to the Burke Museum.  The Burke Museum has long been a valued part of the University of Washington and plans and funding are in process for a new Burke Museum building on the UW campus.

Job Title:  Invertebrate Zoology Collections Manager  

Job Summary:

Invertebrate zoology collections at the Burke Museum include over six hundred thousand specimens distributed in several subdisciplines: malacology, insects, and spiders.  Currently, the malacology collection (~300,000 specimens) is managed part-time by a Collections Manager in Paleontology.  The insect and spider collections (~368,000 specimens) are managed by a volunteer.  The volume of the collection greatly exceeds the number of individuals tasked with managing both the specimens and the accompanying digital resources.

This position must support diverse invertebrate zoology collections, to include malacology, insects, and spiders, on- and off-site. Each collection must be managed appropriately, and each set of data is housed in a different database file. There is much work to be done to bring all of the collections under the appropriate level of care and organization, as the use of the collections for research is determined by their accessibility both digitally and tangibly.

Basic Functions:
The successful candidate will manage day-to-day collections operations, with oversight provided by the Associate Director of Research & Collections at the Burke Museum.  Specific responsibilities include: 

Management and Maintenance of Collections:  75%
Oversee Daily Operations of the Collections
•	Assist in management of collection organization and storage, both on- and off-site
•	Schedule use by researchers, visiting scholars, and students; monitor visitors to the collections
•	Process loans and track use of the collections
•	Prepare collections-related grant applications, permits, and subsequent reports
•	Assist in preparation of grant and other funding proposals

Data Management
•	Maintain records associated with each collection
•	Coordinate digitization of collections data and its dissemination on the internet
•	Complete data entry as needed
•	Train collections staff and students on entry and use of digital resources

Supervise Collections Employees
•	Interview, hire, and train collections staff (paid and volunteer)

Oversee Expenditure of Collections and Grant Budget Funds
•	Order supplies and equipment for the three collections
•	Manage budget activity and develop quarterly budget reports

Growth of the Collections:  10%
•	Process exchanges, accessions, and de-accessions
•	Assist in planning and preparing staff, volunteers, curators for field work

Public Outreach:  15%
•	Respond to public inquiries
•	Attend meetings as necessary and allow access to collections as appropriate
•	Facilitate use of the collections in undergraduate and graduate courses
•	Coordinate with curators and museum exhibits/public programs staff for selection and management of all outreach and exhibit materials from the collections
•	Conduct tours for school groups, university classes, and others
•	Facilitate and schedule use of collections by UW Faculty 

Required Qualifications:
•	Masters degree in relevant branch of invertebrate zoology
•	At least 3 years of related work experience
•	Proficient experience with computer databases and online access of natural history collections

Desired Qualifications:
•	PhD in invertebrate zoology or related field
•	Experience with MySQL, FileMaker Pro, or related relational database systems
•	Experience writing funded grant proposals
