For my money, nothing works better at cleaning shells than ants (and
they don't take 6 months either!) Just put your smelly old shells in a
shady spot next to an ant-hill (or in a hollow under a rock where ants
live!), perhaps protected from the cats and racoons, and check them
every now and then until the job is done. A message on the list a while
ago touted fire ants as best, but any little ants will do nicely.
