Dear all
Picking up on the topic of shell measurements, precision etc.
These concepts, of course, apply in all of science. They are paticularly
problematic in ecology, and there, specifically in the measurement of
diversity. A recent paper, focusing in on the topical area of species
richness estimators is:
Walther BA, Moore JL. 2005. The concepts of bias, precision and accuracy,
and their use in testing the performance of species richness estimators,
with a literature review of estimator performance. Ecography 28: 815-829.
Essential reading for all ecologists among us.
Regards
Alex
