Some of the "big names" in malacology were not professional malacologists,
but advanced amateur shell collectors, like Hugh Cuming and Phillippe
Dautzenberg.

That wonderful old book, "Kingdom of the Seashell" by Abbott, lists the
following royalty as collectors: Louis XIII of France; Empress Catherine II
and Peter the great of Russia; Christian VI of Denmark; Cosimo III, the
Grand Duke of Tuscany; Empress Maria Theresa of Austria; Queen Louisa Ulrica
of Sweden; and Emperor Hirohito of Japan.
