Dear Doug,

I agree that deep sea (or shallow sea) trawling is ecologically a disaster for everyone including the humans. However, I do not believe this squid was alive when encountered. Looks more like whale puke to me. These gents set this up with a dead one. Just look at all the decomposition and even in the photo in the water the thing is missing arms. It is nice they recovered the specimen but it shook no boats.

"Nature" stuff like these films should be condemned.

Yours,

John K. Tucker

Subject: Giant Squid and Disturbing underwater video

Hello All.

I was looking for a few invertebrate videos on google for my class and
I came across this:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4633712994669780584&q=squid

(I assume you'll need to paste it in to view)

I had previously seen the first part of this, I believe it was on the BBC
show 'Nature, Search for the Giant Squid'. Anyway, this 13 minute video
shows the kind of distruction deep sea nets are haveing on the bethic life
off New Zealand (especially around the 10 minute portion of the video) and
speculates how it has impacted the Giant Squid population.

We've had lots of discussions here about mollusca species in and around
coral reefs disappearing, but this I think maybe even more telling of the
reality of the state of the oceans.

For your consideration.
