Donax variabilis in nature lives one year and in certain quieter places
where the water moves crossways of the beach and very little waves occur
they go into the second year.  You can see where the first year ends and
the second begins.  They get quite large.  We also purchased an adult
Cypraea arabica years ago from a aquarium shop and it lived 21 years in
our aquarium.

On the other hand, a few months is the normal lifespan for Donax
variabilis.
