I've just returned from a visit to my sister-in-law's farm just north of Charlottesville, VA, just on the east side of the Blue Ridge. In the drought this summer, a raccoon, most likely, dug up an Utterbeckia imbecillis (Say, 1829) from their farm pond (that's "stock tank" for the Texans among us) so, naturally, I commandered it and brought it home with me. It's just about identical to those I recovered from Lake Blackshear here in south Georgia when its dam broke a while back. There is a difference, however, that shakes my confidence in the ID. That is that the thing is 153 mm long. Does anyone know if U. imbecillis gets that big?
