Conchologists,

We are working on a book for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency about
"Identifying Introduced Land Snails and Slugs in Canada, with a guide to
native genera." The book includes all alien species of snails and slugs
that are established in Canada, as well as species of slugs that are
sometimes found in greenhouses. This project is to be finished by the
end of the Federal Fiscal Year, 31 March 2009. The text and layout are
near completion, but there are a few more species which remain to be
illustrated.

Aleta Karstad is doing watercolour paintings of each species of
introduced slug, but our anticipated sources of slugs that aren't
conveniently obtainable in Canada haven't been able to supply all the
species (we've also made some mistakes along the way, as well), and she
finds that photographs don't provide satisfactory reference material.
You can see the paintings she has already done at

We are looking for these species:

Limacus flavus
Testacella haliotidea
Milax gigas
Boettgerilla pallens (the Worm Slug)
Deroceras panormitanum

If anyone can supply any of these, from introduced populations outside
Canada, or from Europe, we can reimbuse expenses for collection and
shipping, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency will send import
permits for shipping slugs to Canada. Please e-mail Aleta Karstad,
Museum Artist, <[log in to unmask]> or phone (613)258-3107.

Sincerely,

Fred Schueler
