Hi, Harry,
So, in short:
Gould (1848) described concordialis. Gould (1857) later figured
concordialis. I. Lea (1864) described forsheyi. Binney and Bland (1869)
listed concordialis as distinct from TX and also synonymized forsheyi with
grosvenori. Gratacap (1901) notes Binney and Bland kept both concordialis
and forsheyi as separate taxa in their collection indicating they considered
them distinct species. Pilsbry and Ferriss (1906) synonymized forsheyi with
concordialis ("S. foresheyi Lea, of which two paratypes are in the
Philadelphia collection, is surely identical with concordialis", p. 159).
Pilsbry (1948) maintained that synonymy and synonymized witteri with
concordialis. After visiting the type locality for concordialis (Lake
Concordia, LA- note Gould, 1848, and Binney and Bland, 1869, mistakenly
listed Lake Concordia as occurring in TX) and grosvenori (Alexandria, LA)
where Hubricht (1963) synonymized unicolor with concordialis stating, "This
species was found in large numbers around Lake Concordia, and Lake St. John,
and in Ferriday and Vidalia. Specimens from Lake Concordia are usually
larger and more elongate than those from the vicinity of New Orleans, and
are of a bright golden color with a reddish tip to the spire." Also in
Hubricht (1963), he noted that grosvenori was extremely variable and (in
part) what was described as forsheyi (in part) by Lea (and what Hubricht
collected from near the Red River at a sand pit, 3.5 miles southeast of
Alexandria, the whorls are flattened above) is actually grosvenori. Hubricht
(1963) also included concordialis (in part) as a synonym of witteri.
Hubricht (1974) synonymized witteri with forsheyi/concordialis (not sure
about this- have not seen the reference). Hubricht (1985) partially
synonymized concordialis with forsheyi without explanation [possibly because
what had been called concordialis by so many others has in part been
re-allocated to so many different taxa- witteri, unicolor, forsheyi- that
the original description may no longer hold any meaning]
