Ross,

Several days ago, news reports said tar balls were washing up on some beaches in the Florida Keys. The balls were to be tested to determine their source but haven't heard any more about them. There have been news reports that the oil was probably drifting into the currents that will take it to Florida, but haven't heard any reports that it has actually happened. Frankly, I'm not sure anyone knows how far it has spread. At this time Louisiana seems to be affected the most. Let's hope they get it stopped soon.

Subject: [CONCH-L] Is the Gulf oil spill threatening coral reefs yet

I heard last week that if the oil from the Gulf spill reaches a certain current that travels to Florida and from there around the Gulf islands between Fl and South America, that many of the reefs in the region would be at major risk. Does anyone have an update, or further information on this?

From a balmy spring season in New Scotland (yesterday was 29 C!!),
Ross Mayhew.
