I would think shells obtained before their listing on CITES would be ok to buy and sell, just as "old" ivory is allowed to be sold in antique stores and on ebay.

Subject: Re: [CONCH-L] Endangered Species Act-SELLING OF CITES SP ON EBAY

  What are the facts ?

If CITES today says a shell in your collection that you had for xx years is now
a NO-NO -
I can only assume I can't ship overseas to a buyer or new owner unless it is for
science.

Is there a grandfather clause - owned prior to 1975 the functional birth of CITES ?

Is it illegal to own a shell that after time CITES puts it under a watch and
stop position ?

I understand importation / exportation of protected shells/etc would be watched
or taken or worse.

But is big brother going to take them from our collections as well ?

Do National grade collections in Universities, Museums, and even the Federal
Government
going to have steam rollers out front ? How do they manage moving their
collections to another
Museum and getting some of theirs in trade or are they always moved for science
sake ...

My collection is legal to own as it is under several articles of legalese shown
at CITES as
well as older than CITES itself. Countries controlled this themselves prior to
an international
clearing site.
