I wrote a bit about what earthquakes can do to shell collections in an early posting ("Earthquakes in Japan: old friends) on my critically-acclaimed blog at www.polesnail.blogspot.com

It was felt by some people here in Ithaca, New York.

What does the quake have to do with shells, apart from being a
reminder to label your collection well enough that things can get
shaken without losing data? Tectonic action helps determine what
fossils are accessible, instead of under the seafloor or eroded away.
It also can create distinctive environments, such as hydrothermal
vents.
