                         SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT

                      MID-ATLANTIC MALACOLOGISTS
                         First annual meeting

                  Saturday 28 February 1998 10:00 a.m.
                   Delaware Museum of Natural History
                      4840 Kennett Pike, Box 3937
                         Wilmington, DE 19807
Host: Timothy A. Pearce, Curator of Mollusks

The first annual meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Malacologists
(MAM) will be held Saturday 28 February 1998 starting 10 a.m. at
the Delaware Museum of Natural History (DMNH) in Wilmington,
Delaware. Length of the meeting will depend on the number of
speakers and how long-winded we are; we should finish by 4:00 pm.
Meeting and parking are free of charge. After the meeting people
are welcome to visit and use the extensive malacological collection
at DMNH (also available on Sunday by arrangement).
This one-day gathering is for professional, amateur, and
student malacologists working on, or interested in ANY aspect of
mollusks. The meeting will allow malacologists working in the Mid-
Atlantic region of the U.S.A. to meet each other, present and
discuss data, compare notes on methods and problems, renew
friendships, and stay informed of research activities and
opportunities. Because MAM is only one day long, even busy
malacologists have time to attend. There are no dues, officers,
abstracts, or publications.
Presentations (15 minutes or less) range from informal talks
about your latest research, to ideas you wish to bounce around with
other malacologists, to polished talks. A 35 mm slide projector
and overhead projector will be available. Wall and table space are
available for posters.
We will have hot beverages and doughnuts during the morning
break. There are several nearby restaurants for lunch.

Getting there:
Driving: take interstate 95 to Wilmington, Delaware. Take
exit 7 (hwy 52 north). Coming from the north on interstate 95, go
2-3 blocks and turn right onto Pennsylvania Ave (hwy 52 north).
Coming from the south on interstate 95, go 4 blocks and turn left
onto Pennsylvania Ave (hwy 52 north). Stay left and take the left
fork, staying on Pennsylvania Ave.  Continue north for 5 miles;
road becomes Kennett Pike. DMNH is a large mustard-colored
building on the west side of the road, close to Winterthur Museum.
There is plenty of free parking.
Amtrack Train and Greyhound Bus stations are located near each
other in downtown Wilmington. A taxi can take you and your friends
to DMNH for $11 or $12. Unfortunately city buses do not run to
DMNH on Saturdays.

Accommodations
For those wishing to spend the night in the Wilmington area, three
moderately priced hotels that are closest to DMNH are:

Directions to DMNH from all three hotels: Go south on Concord Pike
(Rt. 202), turn right onto Rt. 141 (going west). Get off 141 at exit
for Rt. 52 North - Greenville. Continue north on Rt. 52 (Kennett Pike)
approximately 2 miles. DMNH is a large mustard-colored building on the
left side of the road.

Please let me know if you plan to attend and if you plan to
present something. Future meetings can rotate among institutions.
Let me know if you wish to host MAM in future years.
MAM is patterned after the long-successful Bay Area
Malacologists (BAM) meeting started more than 25 years ago by Gene
Coan. In 1997 George Kennedy started the Southern California
Unified Malacologists (SCUM) meeting. Now such a meeting is
available to East Coast malacologists.
