If the shell 'doesn't look right' without it...why take it off?
I have several cymatiums (cymatia?) some preserved clean and some 'au
naturel'
 
Hey!  perhaps those 'au naturel' are more 'scientifically worthy'!!!!!

Try to use a mixture of 50% alcohol and 50% of glicerine. It works on
cymatium.
