Hi all,

The question as to whether or not to use an existing on-line database is
a very good question. Obviously, the use of an existing online database
such as animals4ever has advantages. Personally, I think Eddie Hardy's
website is, on the whole, an excellent website.

But yes, Dave, as you say, what is authoritative? There needs to be a
site that receives regular updates and review by acknowledged experts
within the field. Then issues of misidentification or misinformation, in
general, is more manageable.

I see this is an excellent brainstorming session. Perhaps, as ideas
become more unified, we...and at this point I use "we" very
loosely...can create a rough-draft project outline, review and modify as
necessary, and then take a course of action.

The alternative, and very likely scenario, is that this wonderful idea
gets neatly tucked away only to re-emerge in another six months here on
Conch-L. As we are all over the place, such an undertaking via internet
is a challenge in itself but I still believe it is attainable.
Ultimately, the question is whether or not there are enough of us able
to devote the time and energy it requires. I'm just a small fish in a
very big ocean...but I'm still game.

Hi Bob,

I've been sending some images when I can to this site. I'm sure Eddie
will appreciate if you send some.

One problem with images of shells that comes up is: what is
authoritative? Looking up some species, there are two very different
taxa illustrated. I believe Thais rugosa is one such example. Between
several of the books and website images, there are two different ones
illustrated. When I get a chance, I can list the differing opinions.

Poppe,
Femorale etc. It looks interesting, although it has a lot of pictures
to be filled in. I guess permission has been given for the use of these
pictures? I have many Marginellas pictures that are not on, and there
are a few mistakes made. Someone tell me something about this Website.
I don't live on this computer to do much surfing. I just try to keep up
with my stuff.
