To all searchers of the Dolium zonatum type:

It is not in the LACM type collection. In 1988 Alan Kohn
published "Type specimens and identity of the described species of
Conus. VIII. The species described 1821-1830" in The Zoological Journal
of the Linnean Society 93(1):19-70. On pages 57-60 he summarized the
cone species described by Jacob Green and states (p. 58) "Unfortunately,
it has also not been possible to determine the present whereabouts of
any of the specimens. Green did acknowledge the collectors of the
specimens he described, but did not indicate the fate of the specimens,
and I have been unable to trace any of them." Perhaps same was the fate
of Dolium zonatum Green, 1830? FYI, this information was initially
located through the marvelous compilation of Gene Coan, Alan Kabat and
Dick Petit ... "2400 years of malacology" located at
http://eratoacnatsci.org/ams/publications/2400_malacology.html
Hope this information helps.

Aloha,

Lindsey

Chris,
Just a hunch, but have you tried contacting the LA county museum of
natural history? I believe there is a museum at Berkeley, too. Try the
Paleontological Research Instistute (PRI) in Ithica, NY while you are at
it. If it is a really old type, they may have some info for you. Other
places to enquire would be the MCZ at Harvard and the Peabody at Yale as
they both hold types.
