Dear Listers,
While the first version of this account was "in press," Michel Duvet
, who has spent a good deal of time researching the Linnaeabn
mollusks, indirectly opointed ou the fact that I had two errors in
my manuscript. This is an emended version
Here is the first of two examples of how Linnaean systematics hold up today:
Conus species named by Carolus Linnaeus in the tenth edition of
Systema Naturae (May 24, 1758) and their present nomenclatorial status:

aurisiacus V
betulinus V
bullatus V

ebraeus V
figulinus V

summus S ammiralis
terebellum V* [Strombidae: Terebellum TS; non Conus terebellum Gmelin, 1791]

* not treated by Dodge (1953). V = valid (31; one volutid, one
strombid); synonym (3); ND = nomen dubium (4; all officially
suppressed; see ICZN, 1965. Opinion 753).
