I also have a nice ultrasonic cleaner, use it on most anything else to
clean or degrease but
have not thought of the shells. Other than water, I'd be concerned of
destroying the color
of the shell - often the internal color is first to go.

Perhaps distilled water, having the least if any internal chemical mix
would be useful
being able to absorb and taint itself with the calcium. I think that is
our best.

I use simple green for most cleaning, but am wary of color or otherwise
staining with
chemical or color a shell.
