The ICZN only deals with things up to the familial level, so there are
no rules of nomenclature that apply, only the desire to be able to
communicate meaningfully.

Pulmonata is another name used for both a group of snails and a group
of arthropods.

Several classes have been proposed for various extinct groups of
mollusks, though many have not gained wide acceptance and some are
widely thought to be either a synonym of something else or
non-molluscan.

It's not clear whether the two "aplacophoran" groups are each other's
closest relatives, so the two are widely recognized (at least among
the handfull of people who think about aplacophorans) as separate
classes.
