Folks,

The Philadelphia Shell Club Auction, perhaps the only surviving public
shell auction in the USA, takes place on Thursday, May 15 at the Academy
of Natural Sciences. In the latest club newsletter, President Rich Kirk
writes:

Our annual auction is here again, here at last! By popular demand, we
did downsize the auction bulk this year to make sure we can get
everybody home at a decent hour! But we definitely have some amazing
shells and other goodies, and everyone will be sure to covet several
items at least! You will want to spend some time inspecting the loot
before the bidding frenzy starts, marking your bid sheets with the items
you are interested in, so plan to be there well before the oral auction
starts at 7PM!

And of course that means, as every year, our auction time schedule will
be a little different from the usual club meetings. First, you
needn’t worry about grabbing supper before you come! Supper will
be there at the auction and you can eat all night if you want! Most of
the club members are bringing yummy food of all varieties, there will be
MORE than enough great food for us to all feast throughout the evening
festivities. The food is one of the best things about our auction, and
something that sets ours apart from all others!

Volunteers for setup will meet at 2PM at the Academy, and we should be
ready to roll at 6PM! Bidding on the silent auction will commence,
along with dinner, at 6PM, and the oral auction will start up promptly
at 7PM sharp! So you’ll need to remember to get there earlier than
usual!

Pat Whitaker will be joining Rich and Paul at the auctioneers’ podium
and JB and Phil will be running.

We always have a great time at our auction, and the auction is what
pays for the shell show and some of our other operations throughout the
year, PLUS a bit of support for the Malacology Department at the Academy
of Natural Sciences. So it is all for a great cause.

See you at the auction! Come one, come all, and bring all those extra
pennies you’ve been saving, and bid and bid and bring home some great
shells, books, and other shell related goodies as your souvenir of the
2008 Philadelphia Shell Club auction!
