At the 1986 COA convention in Ft. Lauderdale, I commented to Archie Jones
upon one of his shells I obtained at the convention, Liguus
septemtritonalis, a gorgeous white shell with parallel green lines on the
whorl.  The convention site was ½ mile east of the sprawling Galleria
shopping mall.  Archie related the location he collected that shell was Big
Hammock,  ½ mile west of where we were.  He told me the hammock was leveled
to build the mall and the shell's habitat totally destroyed. I am happy
Archie was able to collect and preserve the shell.   Habitat destruction is
forever.

Subject: [CONCH-L] Brickell Hammock

Originally called the Great Hammock, Brickell Hammock, near downtown Miami,
was extremely diverse in terms of Liguus. Nearly every color and pattern
combination of mainland Florida Liguus were represented there. As Miami
grew, Brickell was whittled down and now exists only as a few acres, going
by the name of Alice Wainwright Park at the south edge of the approach to
the Rickenbacker Causeway. Brickell Hammock is another sad loss.
