Dear all,

the server in Goettingen is sometims very slow, but will work well the other
day. Contrary to the file size indicated at the download page the actual pdf
file is 34,3 MB only and the download time was 2 minutes, some minutes ago.
In my file there are no black pages, the scan ends at page 67 (back cover).
Thanks for Harry for having such a close look to the misteries and wonders
of pagination in those old works.
Best regards
Bernd Sahlmann

Subject: Re: [CONCH-L] d'Orbigny atlas, digitized

Dear Bernd, Carole, and other interested parties,

The link is working, and a sampling of plates
indicates their quality to be very high.

Because it took me about three minutes to open
the site and about a minute for each sampled
plate to load, in the interest of time, I think
it is helpful to indicate for potential users to
know that the actual plates are on the
odd-numbered pages from 5 through 61. The
remainder (37) of the "uncounted" (but serially
numbered) pages appear to be essentially blank.

The total number of plates is 29, which doesn't
exactly jibe with the usually quoted "1-28" [eg.,
Malacolog 4.1.1 <http://www.malacolog.org/>;
<http://www.malacolog.org/bibliography.php?mode=search&autstr=*Orbigny*&year=&yearend=&title=&titvol=&pubstr=&showspecies=y&submit=Search>
and most published bibliographies]. The following
reading of the actual plate numbers indicates the basis for the discrepancy:
plates 1-4, 4bis, [11 missing], 11bis, 12-28).

Since many of the d'Orbigny mollusks date from
the Atlas (figure and plate caption only) rather
than the text, this public service initiative
will serve students of the western Atlantic
malacofauna very well indeed. Thank you, Bernd,
for your sponsorship of this worthy project with
BHL (Biodiversity Heritage Library) Europe.

Harry
