The really neat trick is when there is only a single date on the
publication, like 1841, yet it really wasn't published until 1842. If
known, this actual date of publication (e.g. 1842) takes precedence, making
taxonomist's lives interesting as they try and unravel our conchological
past. This means the researcher must not only have access to the original
publication, but also to sources that investigate the original publication.
Here is where something like Dick Petit's recent work on the Sowerby's is
worth its weight in, if not gold, then at least something else precious.
And finally, for those who say, "Who cares if the date is 1841 or 1842?"
Taxonomists care. The difference in dates can mean a name thought valid is
actually a junior synonym. So we learn more, we correct things as best we
can, and in the process provide material for many shell collectors to mumble
and gripe about as they change data slips. Hey! If you want stability,
collect neck ties... Ya gotta be tough to collect shells.
Tom Eichhorst - looking at a small nerite from Morocco with a nice pattern
of brown lines and tents on a white shell for which I finally dug up the
original description. The description for my brown and white patterned
shell reads, "...d'un beau noir brillant." My wonderful computer translates
this to read, "...a beautiful glossy black." Wrong name, wrong shell, more
fun digging ahead...
