Dear Lubosh,

In my opinion, Conus commodus A. Adams, 1854 is a Nomen Dubium.  Coomans,
Moolenbeek & Wils reached this conclusion in the 1980s in their Basteria
series covering the named cones alphabetically.  More recently, Filmer
(2001) also considered the species to be Nomen Dubium.  The primary reasons
this determination was made is due to the fact that the description was
brief, the shell not figured in the original description and the type has
been lost.  Filmer notes that this species is figured in Wienkauff (1875).
This figure is quite good as it is on plate (taf.) 61.  Illustrations on the
higher number plates are gernerally better than the earlier ones.
Unfortunately, the shell is plain white, smooth and could easily fit within
the known variation of several cone species.  So, until the type specimen is
traced and redescribed it is probably best to classify it as a mystery.
