The Florida Keys were hit by a hurricane in 1928 and about
1836 people died. The Galveston, Tx. area was hit in 1900 and 8000+
died. Last news report I heard there was one death in the Keys from
Georges. There were people from the Keys in the same hotel we were in
and they were not complaining. I don't think meteorlogists and government
officials are trying to create panic to avoid lawsuits.

Weather prediction is not an exact science. The tornadoes that may occur
with hurricanes can form in minutes. Much of the Andrew damage was from
tornadoes which were well inland from the coast. Listening to someone
describe their house blowing apart during Andrew convinced me to leave
when they say mandatory evacuation.
