Muricidae is a family encompassing a wide range of molluscs. Most of
the subfamilies have animals that have color patterns on the foot sides
and pedestal that repeat through the subfamily.
I was just looking (with a video camcorder)at a Pterynotus elongatus.
It has a pattern on the top of the foot, foot pedestal, and tentacle
groups that is tiled similar to a Cymatium. I had never seen this
pattern on anything but a Cymatium before. Does anyone know if other
species in the Pterynotus have a similar pattern. If so, which. We
have a limited line of Murex in Hawaii to compare this specimen to.
