I was going through stuff to throw out and found the original infestation
state pub as well as APHIS on invasive spp that warn to look out for A
fulica. Somewhere I have 'land snails of medical importance' or some such
named book. I will look in a while. I hope to see that or similar
newsfeature on our local channels to see how they spin the story.
Stay tuned. . . I think I told you at plant fairs they had the pub and
also had a Stopholchilus (spelling) from Brazil instead of a big Achatina.
I told them and they said they 'knew' it wasn't right but didn't have one.
In subsequent years they did have a A. fulica.
A.

Subject: [CONCH-L] Giant African Snails in FL

Hi Harry,
This morning there was a news feature on Baltimore, MD TV. In it the East
African snail infestation that you brought to our attention in "Therrrrrr
Backkkkkk" was featured. There was a doctor in FL who said that one should
wear rubber gloves to pick one up due to the worm that they carry which
migrates the human brain. That no cure was known for the brain worm
infection. Any comments on this?
I fear that the news broadcast up here will cause people to kill any snails
that they find. The reproter "had" to leave the set after the feature
because it made her sick.
Matt
